HOP SWING &
A JUMP PROGRAM
Bringing Social Dancing to Your School !
Upon the Jefferson Public School System request in
Metairie, Louisiana, HOP SWING & A JUMP created a
Social Dance Program inspired by Dancing Classrooms™.
The program started in January 2006 in Metairie in
5 Elementary Schools and 3 High Schools. This year
the program has been extended to a total of 20
schools. The list and the location of the schools
for 2007-2008 can be found
here.
5th Graders learn five dances: Merengue,
Salsa, Swing,
Waltz and Tango, while 8th, 11th and 12th graders
learn two dances: Salsa and Swing.
The goals
of this program are to:
-
Teach children a
skill in the arts; partner dancing at an early
age.
-
Teach them etiquette
and social qualities that will prepare them for
adulthood such as self-confidence, self-esteem,
mutual respect, cooperation and teamwork.
-
Expose children to
different music styles and cultures.
-
Get children to
exercise while learning a skill
If
you like the idea of this program and would to help
us bring Social Dancing to your school, please
contact us at (504) 897-0327 or email us at
schools@hopswingjump.com.
NOTE:
-
A course consists of
a total of 20 lessons, taught 1 day a week for
20 weeks or twice a week for 10 weeks.
-
A maximum of 30
children per class is required. A balanced
number of girls and boys is preferred.
-
No pre-requisite or
previous dance experience is needed. Teachers
are encouraged to participate.
-
We need a clean and
well-lit space. A gym, auditorium or cafeteria
works well. Floor can be anything but cement or
carpeting. A boom box with
speakers is sufficient to play music.
